My PCOS Story
I didn't have any symptoms of PCOS until after I moved in with my now ex husband, who we will call 'M', after he returned home from Iraq. He came home in December of two-thousand-nine and we got an apartment together, come January my monthly visitor never arrived. We didn't really think much of it at that time, except that maybe I was pregnant. It was way to soon to tell if I was expecting or not. In March of 2010, M and I got married, and still no monthly visitor so we bought a home pregnancy test which was came back negative, and we thought maybe it was still to soon. In April, we got PCSed (A Military Move) to the state of Oklahoma, and still no visitor...We bought test after test after test and all of them came up negative. So then we scheduled me a Dr's appointment for a blood test to see if I was pregnant, making sure that I was not getting false negatives, which turns out I was not getting false negatives and I was not pregnant. That's when we really started to question what was going on with me and why I was not getting my monthly visitor...
May decided to roll around and there was rumor of a deployment, and usually with the Army the rumor about deployments are true, sure enough by the 2nd of May it was confirmed with orders of Deployment. M talked with his parents and they decided that I would move to Maine to live with them while M was deployed, yep that's right I didn't really have a say in the matter of where I wanted to be during the Deployment. I, finally, agreed to move to Maine with M's parents because it would give me time to meet and get to know them. M and I packed all of our things from the house that we had just moved into not even a month prior and split everything between a storage unit or the stack of things to go to Maine with me. After everything that was staying in Oklahoma in the storage unit was in it M and I loaded up the truck with all the things that was going with me, our dog included and went on post to check in for M's pre-deployment leave and then we were off on our trip to Maine which only took us a day and a half instead of 2 to 3 days, because we drove straight through and switched drivers every 2 to 4 hours. We arrived at his parents house in Maine on May 16th 2010, the very first day that I met his parents, was also the day that they opened up their home to me to move in for this dreaded deployment. They were super nice and very welcoming to me, and still to this day even though M and I are not married anymore I still call and talk to them. They were my family when mine wasn't there for me.
Come June, after M finally deployed I still had not had my monthly visitor and I was talking with M's mother, who we will call Joy, about it and she had started doing some research when she was at work the next few days, as I was finding a Dr in Maine to be able to start looking into the situation. Joy had found information about PCOS and told me about it and to really look into it because it had the same symptoms that I was having and that is went I started going to my Dr., Dr. P, about this. Dr. P ran test after test and couldn't seem to figure out what was going on with me and he referred me to an OB/GYN, Dr. L, who also performed test after test, drawing vile after vile of blood and she finally diagnosed me with PCOS in February of 2011. All Dr. L did was diagnose me and didn't really explain the condition. By this point in time M and I had started having some problems in our marriage and divorce was being brought into things..I naturally was more interested in trying to save my marriage than I was about PCOS. I tried everything that I could possibly think of to be able to save my marriage, went to Joy's pastor for advice, including going to a marriage counselor, which only caused more problems because M was pissed that I mentioned going to a counselor about our marriage problems and he told me that he was not going to some random stranger for them to be able to tell him that he was wrong and such... It finally got to the point that M was 99.9% sure that he wanted us to get divorced and he was just waiting on me to give him the other 0.1%. It got so hard to deal with that I finally told him that I wanted a divorce and I moved to Texas on May the 1st, 2011 and we were divorced on July the 11th. I was then more worried about getting myself on my feet and move forward with my life that I wasn't concerned about my diagnoses with PCOS.
Today, I am back living in Oklahoma with my amazing boyfriend, 'R', and I finally have the time to be able to learn more about my PCOS and learn how to cope with having this what is said to be an incurable condition.
